Import Operations Specialist
Job Summary The Import Operations Specialist will be responsible for managing and optimizing the end-to-end import process for goods arriving into the United States. This detail-oriented role requires ensuring compliance with all international trade laws and customs regulations while coordinating with suppliers, freight forwarders, and customs brokers to facilitate the timely and efficient delivery of goods. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver with a strong understanding of international logistics.
Key Responsibilities
- Shipment Coordination: Manage and coordinate all import operations, including arranging and tracking shipments from overseas suppliers to domestic warehouses and facilities.
- Customs and Compliance: Ensure all import processes adhere to relevant international trade regulations and customs laws. Prepare, review, and submit accurate import documentation, such as commercial invoices, bills of lading, and customs declarations. Effective communication of Entry instructions including accurate HTS classification.
- Documentation Management: Maintain precise and complete records of all import transactions, including tracking documents for audit purposes.
- Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for external partners, including freight forwarders, customs brokers, and carriers, to resolve shipment discrepancies or delays. Provide timely and proactive status updates to internal stakeholders, such as purchasing and sales teams.
- Problem Resolution: Address and resolve operational issues that arise during the import process, including delays, or documentation errors.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify and recommend opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency within the import operations workflow.
- Regulatory Awareness: Stay informed of changes to import regulations, tariffs, and trade policies to ensure ongoing compliance.
Required Qualifications Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Supply Chain Management, Logistics, or International Business, or 3 years relevant experience in import operations, logistics, or customs brokerage. Essential skills include in-depth knowledge of customs regulations and import documentation, proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel), and experience with import management. Strong organizational, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills are also required. The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment is crucial. Team oriented, self-motivated.
Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include a Licensed Customs Broker certification, experience with specific ERP systems like SAP.
